One step at a time

I’m awake.

I hear the wind howl and expect snow.  Do I get up?  Is it time?  Is Kevin up?

Eyes open?  Check!

The room is dark save for the light of the street-light.

I see the glow of the office light from downstairs and know Kevin is up.

Open curtains – no snow?  Check!

Phew.  No need for boots today.

Walk?  No walk?   Knees feel better.  So far so good.

Cold wind blows!  Biting.  Hood up?  Check!

Pace is good.  I’m not light-headed today.

Through the wetland and onto Tiffin Street.

Wind is at our back.  Feels good.  I am alive.

Chat, chat, chat – work, life, kids, Christmas… we plan LIFE.

Traffic and toxins along Tiffin – turn the corner.

Pace?  Good.  Warm?  Very.  Life?  I’m here! I am walking!  I celebrate my knees.

Home stretch.  Stick?  Nope.  I grab and break an old branch from a pine tree.  Stick?  Check!

Jazz runs.  She is happy.  I am happy.  Kevin and I smile.  Throw and repeat.

Pause.  Hug.  Breathe.  Count my blessings? Check!

It’s quiet when we come into the house.  No hurry, no scurry.  Hang coats, put away mitts.

“Coffee?” Kevin asks.

“Yes, please.”

Has life become “normal” this morning?  Check.

Thank God.

About inmycorner

This blog began as an opportunity to tell my Dad's stories. I sat with him and the computer and together we told stories. It was a wonderful way to get to know Dad. He was 9. He and Mom had a wonderful life together and since she passed away a year and a half before him - Dad was ready to join her. I no longer tell his stories but have found stories of my own. The impetus to resume this blog was the discovery that I had stage 4 ovarian cancer. Since blogging had been so therapeutic for my dad and I to get through our grief, I felt maybe this would be a good outlet to process my situation. I also hoped it may serve as an outreach to anyone else who is facing this very ominous journey. So far, so good.
